NEW MERCEDES CLK
The wraps are about to be taken off Mercedes’ new coupé – and here are the pictures to prove it. This is the new CLK – the much-anticipated rival for BMW’s 3-Series Coupé and Audi’s A5.
Spied outside the firm’s Stuttgart base, it uses underpinnings from the all-new C-Class. When it goes on sale in 2009, the coupé will debut a sleeker, chunkier and wider look, to replace the current car’s low-nose, high-tail stance.
NEW VW GOLF
Volkswagen is teeing up a new Golf, Auto Express can exclusively reveal. And as these spy shots show, the sixth-generation family hatch is literally only months away.
After debuting at the Geneva Motor Show in March, the Golf MkVI will go on sale here next summer. The German firm is replacing the current car early because it’s not profitable enough. Even though the hatch has sold in big numbers since being introduced in 2003, it takes twice as long to build as its Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra rivals.
HYUNDAI COUPÉ
These pictures will have Hyundai top brass in a rage! At the Los Angeles Motor Show last week, the company unveiled a concept version of the car that will replace the ageing Coupé. But now, our spy photographers have snapped the production model. They captured the sleek newcomer at a customer clinic in the US, so you don’t have to wait until the car is officially unveiled next year to see what’s in store.
And the special viewing – which was designed to gauge reaction to the new model’s shape – left no doubt about the car which Hyundai regards as the main competitor to its new two-door. That’s because the silver model was lined up alongside a Ford Mustang in a similar colour.
BMW MINI SUV
BMW ISETTA
If there’s one car maker that knows how to resurrect a motoring legend, it’s BMW.And the firm that brought us the MINI has delved into the design archive once again – to produce a 21st-century Isetta microcar!
With its tiny dimensions and simple cabin, the Fifties original was hard to beat in town, even if it had no reverse gear. The car was only 2.4 metres long, with space for two adults inside – and even some luggage.
And now it looks as if the Fiat 500 and Smart ForTwo could have a new rival. Bringing the concept up to date, the modern Isetta’s dimensions are bigger. That’s to help it accommodate a fourth wheel - the post-war was famously a three-wheeler, although examples with an extra rim were produced. A distinctive feature of the ‘bubble car’ was its unique front access. Safety regulations don’t allow that today, but the cute shape will remain. And while the classic delivered only 12bhp, the newcomer will easily keep pace with urban traffic, thanks to the efforts of BMW’s powertrain development team.
The rear-mounted engine layout will be retained. This gives the car similar packaging advantages to Volkswagen’s up! concepts, as seen at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. And, due to its tiny size and light weight, the new Isetta will have the lowest CO2 output of any car in BMW’s range.
That will help it to cut the line-up’s average emissions to meet future targets. A zero-emissions electric variant would also provide a similar benefit.
BMW has given no official confirmation of the new Isetta’s existence, but company bosses are said to be considering design proposals. One issue to address is brand image. Could such a car live up to the firm’s “ultimate driving machine” slogan?
If so, expect more about the new Isetta in 2010.

VW TOUAREG R50
The Touareg R50 has a big fat diesel engine, the well known 4,9 liter V10. But tweaks to its turbo and motormanagementsysteem have meant that the R50 has 350 diesel BHP and 850 Nm. So it only takes 6,7 to reach 60 mph. The normal V10 TDI takes 7,4 seconds to reach the same speed. The top speed is 235 km/h.

JAGUAR X-TYPE
Jaguar isn't letting its much-maligned X-Type die quietly, instead incorporating nearly 500 new components into the 2009 model, improving the interior and molding the exterior very subtly in line with the XJ flagship and the upcoming XF. And -- for the 2.2 diesel model sold in Europe anyway -- Jag is introducing a new six-speed automatic transmission with a sequential shift feature.

VW TIGUAN by ABT
The time between a manufacturer releasing a new model and the tuning fraternity seizing upon it like vultures on a limping bunny shortens again. VW has barely taken the wraps off the Tiguan SUV, but that hasn't stopped ABT Sportsline tuning it up to a frenzied state of softroadishness.
The guys at ABT don't just do the standard cosmetic overhaul - after years of involvement in Germany's DTM touring car championship with Audi, they're pretty good at squeezing out a bit of extra power, too - so you can be fairly sure you're getting the quickest Tiguan on the road. Actually, you might be getting the only Tiguan on the road for a while.
